14 SEPTEMBER 2021 MEETING OF THE JACKSONVILLE ORCHID SOCIETY

Please mark your calendars for the evening of 9 September 2021 from 7 – 9 PM as the Jacksonville Orchid Society (JOS) conducts its monthly meeting. This month’s meeting is focused on a hands-on demonstration of potting techniques for orchids.

GENERAL

Doors will open at 6:00pm and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00pm. At that time, we will conduct a brief business meeting and then take a short break in preparation for a demonstration by JOS member and First Vice-President Lorraine Conover about potting orchids. This evening’s meeting will prepare members to pot candidate orchids in appropriate media. Remember also that the JOS Fall Orchid and Plant Sale will take place the following weekend at the Mandarin Garden Club and offers a perfect opportunity to purchase new orchids and media. The Jacksonville Orchid Society meets on the second Tuesday of each month (except in May and December) at the Mandarin Garden Club. The doors open at 6:00 pm. Guests and visitors are always welcome! If you decide to join after coming to a few meetings, membership is $25.00 for an individual and $35.00 for a family.

Our General Meeting is a good time to ask questions from our expert growers and get tips for what to do when there is a problem. We cover a wide variety of topics including species and hybrids that are good to grow in this area, identification of pests and diseases, watering, and fertilizing, and where to grow your orchids.

COVID. It appears COVID will be with us for the foreseeable future. If you are vulnerable, please be sure to bring and wear a mask.

RAFFLE TABLE. The JOS has a raffle table at all monthly meetings that offers everyone and especially new members a chance to pick up new and different genera of orchids to add to your collection. Please buy your Raffle Tickets prior to the start of the meeting. Orchids for the Raffle Table were provided by long-time JOS memer Marv Ragan. Don’t hesitate to ask the members if you have questions about these or anyother orchids.

ORCHID SALES. Member orchid sales are encouraged at this meeting. Members wishing to resell their orchids are welcome to sell them as well with the proviso that as a JOS event, 20% of sales fees go to the club.

General Guidelines for Silent Auction or Orchid Sales.

1. Plants must be in bloom or AOS awarded.
2. If plants are not in bloom – bring a picture of the Bloom!
3. Plants must be insect free as well as free of visible fungus or virus.
4. Please clean the orchid and prepare as for a show.

SILENT AUCTION TABLE. Members may offer two orchids for silent auction at the Silent Auction Table. It is recommended that such orchids be either in bloom or accompanied by a photograph and description. 20% of the Silent Auction sales fees goes to the JOS. It is also recommended that the seller bring a completed Silent Auction Form (see link below).

SHOW TABLE: Members, and especially Novice Growers, are encouraged to bring blooming orchids for a friendly judging at the Show Table. Links to the Show Table Instructions and interactive Show Table Forms are available below. Remember also that all orchids brought for the Show Table should be free of virus, bugs, scale, or any other pests. Please also clean any orchid for show as if for show presentation.

REFRESHMENTS. Refreshments will be available at the break.
