October 2021 JOS General Meeting Announcement

Please mark your calendars for the evening of 12 October 2021 from 7 – 9 PM as the Jacksonville Orchid Society (JOS) conducts its monthly meeting.

GENERAL:

Doors will open at 6:00pm and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00pm. Prior to the start of the meeting, please buy your raffle tickets. Orchids for the Raffle Table are sourced from those donated by longtime JOS member Marv Ragan. Don’t miss this chance to pick up new and different genera of orchids to add to your collection at a good price.

At 7PM, we will have a brief business meeting and then take a brief break in preparation for the presentation by Thanh Ngyuen of Spring Water Orchids. Thanh is a JOS favorite and this month will speak on Paphiopedilum Genus Care and Culture. The timing couldn’t be better for JOS members as a featured article of the American Orchid Society’s (AOS) monthly publication Orchids is entitled Tiny Slippers and covers the Paphiopedilum.

SILENT AUCTION TABLE: Members may offer two orchids for silent auction at the Silent Auction Table. It is recommended that such orchids be either in bloom or accompanied by a photograph and description. 20% of the Silent Auction sales fees goes to the JOS. It is also recommended that the seller bring a completed Silent Auction Form (see link below).

SHOW TABLE: Members – Don’t forget to bring your blooming orchids for the Show Table. Remember also that all orchids brought for the Show Table should be free of virus, bugs, scale, or any other pests. Please also clean any orchid for sale, auction, or the Show Table.

The Jacksonville Orchid Society meets on the second Tuesday of each month (except in May and December) at the Mandarin Garden Club at 2892 Loretto Road, Jacksonville, FL 32223. The doors open at 6:00 pm. Guests and visitors are always welcome! If you decide to join after coming to a few meetings, membership is $35.00 for a family and $25.00 for individuals.

Our General Meeting is a good time to ask questions from our expert growers and get tips for what to do when there is a problem. We cover a wide variety of topics including species and hybrids that are good to grow in this area, identification of pests and diseases, watering and fertilizing, and where to grow your orchids.

Members, and especially Novice Growers, are encouraged to bring blooming plants for a friendly judging at the Show Table. Links to the Show Table Instructions and interactive Show Table Forms are available below.
