9 March 2021 Meeting of the Jacksonville Orchid Society (JOS)

Please mark your calendars for the evening of 9 March 2021 from 7 – 9 PM as the Jacksonville Orchid Society conducts it’s monthly meeting. This month’s meeting is focused on preparations for the JOS Jacksonville Orchid Show 20-21 March. As such there will be no featured speaker.

GENERAL:

Doors will open at 6:00pm and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00pm. Prior to the start of the meeting, please buy your raffle tickets. Orchids for the Raffle Table are sourced from Ritter 1 Orchids. Don’t miss this chance to pick up new and different genera of orchids to add to your collection at a good price.

At 7PM, we will have a brief business meeting and then take a brief break for you to finish your purchases, enter the raffle, and allow for late comers to do the same. We will then reconvene for to discuss preparations for the Jacksonville Orchid Show, 20-21 March.

SILENT AUCTION TABLE. Members may offer two orchids for silent auction at the Silent Auction Table. It is recommended that such orchids be either in bloom or accompanied by a photograph and description. 20% of the Silent Auction sales fees goes to the JOS. It is also recommended that the seller bring a completed Silent Auction Form (see link below).

MEMBER ORCHID SALES. As an exception, at this meeting Members wishing to resell their orchids are welcome to sell them as well with the proviso that as a JOS event, 20% of sales fees go to the club.

General Guidelines for Silent Auction or Orchid Sales.

  1. Plants must be in bloom or AOS awarded.
  2. If plants are not in bloom – bring a picture of the Bloom!
  3. Plants must be insect free as well as free of visible fungus or virus.
  4. Please clean the orchid and prepare as for a show.

SHOW TABLE: Members – Don’t forget to bring your blooming orchids for the Show Table. Remember also that all orchids brought for the Show Table should be free of virus, bugs, scale, or any other pests. Please also clean any orchid for sale, auction, or show as if for show presentation.

Social Distancing. Covid considerations will be with us for the foreseeable future. Please bring a mask to wear if you can’t maintain social distancing. What does that mean? Wear a mask if you can’t be 6 feet away from others at the meeting.

The Jacksonville Orchid Society meets on the second Tuesday of each month (except in May and December) at the Mandarin Garden Club at 2892 Loretto Road, Jacksonville, FL 32223. The doors open at 6:00 pm. Guests and visitors are always welcome! If you decide to join after coming to a few meetings, membership is $25.00 for a family and $20.00 for individuals.

Our General Meeting is a good time to ask questions from our expert growers and get tips for what to do when there is a problem. We cover a wide variety of topics including species and hybrids that are good to grow in this area, identification of pests and diseases, watering and fertilizing, and where to grow your orchids.

Members, and especially Novice Growers, are encouraged to bring blooming plants for a friendly judging at the Show Table. Links to the Show Table Instructions and interactive Show Table Forms are available below.
